after the info i gathered here, i dumped my harddrive. formatted, loaded win98se. cleaned up os, defrag, and checked for errors. i did a find on this file. found only one mfc42.dll file, locted in c:\windows\system. then i checked the version of this file, that loaded off of the 98se cd. it is version 6.00.8447.0. i went to microsoft site and found that this was new version. so this should not be a problem. next i loaded fritz6. did a find on mfc42.dll. now there are two of these files. another at c:\programfiles\chessbase\fritz6. at this point i renamed the mfc file in fritz to "hyatt". rebooted. did another find for this file, now only the original one is there in sys file. went to chess.net, played two games---crash, same error message. closed out, rebooted, uninstalled fritz6. cleaned up os. after booting up, did a find on this again, found only the original file, (uninstall worked). took master Jorge Pichard advice, renamed the original mfc file to "Sarah". did a find, no mfc file. now i reloaded fritz6. did a find for mfc. only one file, and it is located in fritz. i went back to chess.net played two games against another comp., no crash so far. i will continue to test. but my question is still there, what is the purpose of this file, why does fritz move it over to its own folder, and if it is important, then how can my os run without it(remember i renamed the original). thanks for any info. and thanks to Sarah and Jorge. and who is this ed guy saying a boot cures everything. must be a linux person. (just kidding i know who he is).
