The file is part of the Microsoft C compiler. It supplies I believe Microsoft Foundation Classes. Fritz installs it's own copy to avoid having to live with an inconsistent version if Windows has an earlier or later version. You need the file to run some programs that depend on it - you should get a suitable error when you try to run them. Since Fritz supplies it's own, I'm not sure why you should see an error. I fixed someone elses problem with Fritz crashing with MFC42.DLL by refreshing his BIOS settings and ensuring Windows started cleanly and without errors. So he appeared to have a corrupt BIOS - possibly a failing BIOS battery as the machine was 2 years old. Could you have a similar lurking problem? In this case starting Fritz from the Start button, programs, chessbase, Fritz 6 caused an error every time, whereas clicking on the desktop icon gave intermittent errors - weird. Kind of reason I run Linux on my normal desktop.
