Subject: Announce: Screamer Build 55

Author: William Bryant

Date: 19:08:17 11/25/00

Screamer Chess build 55 is ready.

New in this release
1. An automatic preferences file is generated when the program quits normally.
It saves the windows locations and sizes on the screen as well as any
options selected in the options menu.
This means that these options will automatically be present at startup.
To reset the program, you can simply trash the preferences file.

In addition to a preference file, there are now custom icon's for the
Opening Book file and the Preference file.

2. Added a search option -- there are now two types of searches
Tactical Search (default) -- this is Screamer's default search type
and is stronger but essentially the same as previous builds of
          Screamer.
Aggressive Search -- this is faster, but may not find some tactical
          shots at lower search depths.
3. An optional larger opening book (~3 megabytes instead of ~1 megabyte).
4. Overall improved search.

Improvements and Bug Fixes
1. Better handling of fail low are the root of the search tree.
2. Fixed an error in displaying mate scores in the game window
3. Fixed a bug with Apple Events to prevent reentry problems with the search.
4. Adjusted the window display to prevent data from longer searches from
     running together.
5. Improved time management code.
6. Now using Codewarrior 6.
7. Fixed a bug that would randomly cause a type 2 error on normal exit.

Build 55 should soon be available on MacGift's (Info Mac) and from the
Exachess web site. Because of bandwidth limitations constantly closing
my page, Screamer can no longer be downloaded directly from me.

Also, as everything starts to shift to Mac OS X, there is no longer a 68k
version of Screamer available. If you need a 68k version, contact me
directly.
