Probably true for you and me, Sarah, because we are now used to the net and used
to this place since a long time.
But actually I remember when I first came here on CCC, it took me some time to
figure out how it worked and what could be posted and in which terms. I think
some guidelines could be helpful in this case.
It's actually more like having a FAQ (which we desperatly need BTW) than like
having laws.
The question about having laws here has been discussed in length when the
moderators election took place. We eventually have found that it's almost
impossible (or too hard) to write laws, and the best thing was to rely on the
moderators judgement. And it works very well.
So I'm in favor of guidelines or soft "CCC netiquette". When you think about it,
there are a number of issues that could be usefully clarified.
For example: is it OK to post 100Kb of PGN in a message? If not, where is the
limit, approximately? If a thread continues on and on, what is the appropriate
way to "snip" parts of the previous messages? Is it OK to post an answer to a
message in a new thread without quoting the original message? Is it OK to post a
new subject with this header: "Game delayed (NT)". Or with this one: "My chair
is broken, I have to get another one, I'm back in a few minutes (NT)". Is it OK
to post in hyper-abbreviated form, like this: "i thnk u sh rplay gam"? Is it OK
to post an entire thread in non-english language?
And so on...
So if somebody does not follow the guidelines, he knows that probably nothing
will be done against him, but he also knows that his behaviour can make some
people angry. At least...
