Two possible problems here:

1) You're running Windows 2000, which is not officially supported.
2) It sounds like you're using Spoken Move Announcements. Try switching to any
of the other piece movement sound options (no sound being the least likely to
cause problems, obviously).

Also, if you are not doing it already, check to see what the input and output to
your engine is via the XBoard Engine Monitor windows (or something like
that...can't remember the exact name).
