I cannot talk about the most recent program versions, but I used to think that
Crafty, Chessmaster (King) and M-Chess Pro are, or were, best in the endgame.
But this opinion was built mainly upon results from the following few test
positions (tested without! tablebases):

8/3Np3/7P/1p3P2/1k6/5K2/1b6/8 w - - bm f6
8/6k1/8/5PK1/4b1B1/7P/8/8 b - - bm Bxf5
3k4/p7/K3BP2/8/7p/8/2P4P/8 w - - bm Kb7
6k1/2R2p1p/5rp1/8/6P1/P2bRB2/1r5P/7K b - - bm Rxf3
8/4p3/1K6/8/2k1P3/6N1/7p/8 w - - bm Ka5
8/5pk1/5pnp/8/4BPP1/4K2P/8/8 b - - bm h5

Maybe some of you want to try out the new programs, or version, with these.

Btw. the third one, Kb7, is one of my favorite computer moves I witnessed in a
game. Machine style, but very elegant as well in this case (played by WChess
1.04).

The last one could cause some discussion, but Crafty has "acknowledged" the move
h5 by 2 billion nodes (thanks to Dann Corbit). It is a blind bishop position.

M.Scheidl
