xboard and WinBoard can already a control chess engine running on another
machine, talking to it using TCP/IP. All you need is an rsh server on the
machine that will be running the engine, to accept WinBoard's command to start
up the engine.

Unfortunately, although every Unix system today comes with an rsh server, rsh
servers aren't common in the Windows world. There are some that come with $100
suites of tools that I don't need, so I haven't tried them, and there are
several shareware ones. The last time I looked at shareware rsh servers, none
of the ones I could find actually worked -- which is mysterious, since rsh is
very simple.

Earlier this year Dan Newman sent me a simple version of an rsh server that is
designed to do just enough to work with WinBoard. I forgot to try it and put it
up on my Web page for download, but I'll go and put it up now (without trying
it, sorry). I hope that will help some folks. It will be on
http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html, at the bottom of the page, as soon as I can
get my Web site to update. (I'm having a problem with it right now.)
