Be careful with your comparisons.  If you want to decide whether to cut off
high, it's ">= beta".  I'm a little worried about comparisons elsewhere.

One way to find out.  You can back up your source code, put the MVV/LVA stuff
back, fix the bug, and do your test.  It's important to understand what is going
on or you end up with progressive code rot.
