I know I'm lucky if I can upgrade every year.  I ran an old Cyrix 6x86-166 for
two years before moving up to an AMD K6/2-300, and after a year and a half I
just did the "cheap" upgrade, swapping my 300 chip for a 500 chip (the max my
motherboard can handle).
