It is not strength-relevant how much time a program needs to show a depth of 12,
but how long it takes to FIND a strong move. It may take longer to display a
depth of 12, but nevertheless solve faster (i.e., when the selectivity works
more effective than before).
You may want to compare the SOLVING TIME you get from CM8k, with my results from
CM6k in the following positions, but please add the CPU and clock speed info. I
have used a PII/333 Mhz (32 MB hash).
[D]3r1n1r/1p2q1k1/p1p1P1p1/3n4/5Pp1/P5N1/1P3QP1/1BR1R1K1 w - -
30 seconds for Bxg6 (Capablanca-Kan)
[D]2r3k1/pp1b1p2/1q1pp1p1/2r3Pn/4P3/1BN2Q2/PPP5/1K1R3R w - -
56 seconds for Rxh5 (Fischer-Gligoic)
Does CM8k take twice as long? I'd be surprised.
