Thank God you only asked about changes in the chess engine. When I first saw
this post I thought you were asking about ALL changes in the versions. That
would take too long to type! But, since you're just asking about the engines....

Chessmaster 5000 and 5500 used the same version of The King (can't remember the
version number).

Chessmaster 6000 used The King 2.61D, if I recall correctly, and it was
generally felt by all concerned to be significantly stronger than the engine in
5500 and 5000.

Chessmaster 7000 used the same engine as in 6000, but the GUI had a "pseudo-bug"
in that the user could not modify the hash table size by editing the appropriate
entry in the user's INI file. This was possible in CM6000.

Chessmaster 8000 is using a brand new version of The King (v3.12) which is
believed to be stronger than the version in CM7000, but some are reporting that
it does not use its time to best advantage.

I've never heard about any settings/configuration/problems that dealt with the
ENGINE supposedly playing weaker as Black. However, the Chessmaster default
opening book is quite infamous for its less than stellar lines, and this could
account for some or most of the problem.
