Dear Chess Friends ! I few days ago I sent here a sad message that I lost my whole database with 1.5 mln. games just overnight. After that I received lots of e-mails with your support and recommendations. Thanks to Everybody. I followed your advise and I decided to buy a CD-writer to back up all important information. So, next day I went to the nearby comp. shop and asked for a good Cd-burner. The person in the shop recommended Sony and I agreed. Then he asked me if I would like to change my small hard drive to a new big one. He said that he would install a very reliable one, the brand would be something like Quandam, if I am not mistaken with spelling. Today I picked my PC up and paid to the man. Just now I had a friend who is just a ordinary computer user like me. But he has a Sony CD burner and he wanted to show me how to operate. His first question was - is it a really Sony ? I don't know. There wasn't any brand name on the front panel. So we looked in the Device menager and found that my CD burner had a strange name RWD RW 4224. We looked everywhere but couldn't find any Sony. It made us suspicious and we checked the brand of the new hard drive. It was 10 Gb Samsung SV 1021D. So, no Quadrum. It is very unpleasant for me. I don't want to lose my database once more because of the cheap HD. So, which one is cheaper ? If the person cheated , I'll probably give him a hell. I'll work for the next 2 days till very late, but this Wendsday I'll have a day off and I am going to take my PC to that shop. But I want to be sure that these part are worse than Sony and Quardum. Can anybody here tell me about this RWD RW 4224 brand ? Is it just noname made in China or Taiwan? Sony had to be 8x4x4 and it should take 15 minutes to back up a CD. My CD burner worked for 35 minutes. So, it could be very slow or out-of-date. I have nobody to ask about it, so please if you answer this off-topic question, I'd be very happy. Should I worry about it, or it makes no differance. I have a slow 8xspeed CD ROM, so could it be the reason that the CDburner worked so slow ? I don't beleive. Best wishes Anatoli
