THis seems to be a problem with Xfree86 release 4.  I have the same problem
on redhat 7, whether I use KDE or Gnome.  Same result.  Looks vaguely like
the font for the "buttons" (<, <<, etc) is a bit too big for reasons unknown,
which might make it slide back to the left rather than getting truncated.

It is a bug...

And there are others...  (not specifically dealing with xboard).  Xfree86
release 4 has several "issues"...
