The point!  If now 18.QxN, QxB! or 18 B-Q3 N-N4 Black keeps a pawn with an easy
win, while 18 BxB leads to "Philidor's legacy":  18...Q-N4 ch 19 K-N1 N-K7 ch 20
K-B1 N-B6 dbl ch 21 K-N1 Q-B8 ch 22 RxQ N-K7 mate!
So Byrne acceps the Queen offer, allowing multiple discovered checks.

Sorry that I put this in descriptive notation.   18.Bd3 Nb5 -+ is what it means.
