I was never able to get ExaChess to work playing automated matches.  That's part
of the reason I moved to another format for online play.

It's a pretty simple matter to get an interface spec which will allow automated
matches.  I'm running such a match on ICC now.  Note that it has to be done on
separate machines, so you need either a ICC-like server or some other connection
device.  But the Fixation spec will allow automated matches on ICC without
difficulty.
