I happen to know several very successful authors. Note one of them is my neighbour. They earn hell of a lot more and can live from it. But sure scientific books seem to be the exception, also people who are not too good in negotiating belong to that exception, those retail guys are real tough to deal with indeed. 10 to 20% is a very normal payment for authors. Of course not on paperbacks that are getting sold for $5 in shops. but when your target is to sell 1000 copies or less obviously it doesn't reward to do the huge effort to find a cool deal, so don't worry and keep writing! >At least 50% of the price paid by the end customer goes to the >retailer.
