To answer your questions:
1) There is no way to disable the opening movie. The FASTEST way to get past it
is to copy it to hard drive. It will therefore load faster, meaning you can
cancel it faster.
2) The maximum hash table setting available to you is based on your CURRENTLY
AVAILABLE PHYSICAL RAM. Therefore, you will never be able to use the 256MB
setting, because your machine has 256MB, but some of that will always be used.
You DEFINITELY wouldn't want a 256MB hash table anyway, if your machine only has
256MB, because an IMMENSE amount of thrashing would occur just trying to
allocate that memory.
3) The program will reset The King engine's hash table after every game
automatically.
4) It is generally believed that the CM8000 book, while the deepest, is not the
best book available. However, no one has yet agreed which of the OTHER books are
guaranteed to be better.
5) I leave personality setting suggestions to many of the other users here, who
have done far more testing in that field, and all have their own opinions on the
matter. I can only tell you that Johan, the writer of The King, believes that
the default settings are the best for a general personality (i.e., one that is
going to be playing against all kinds of opponents and all kinds of time
controls).
