Don't worry about it (which I don't think you do). I have yet to see a proof for
the "please all" theorem :o).

I think it's possible to make a (more or less) general rule based on the
principle of legitimate reasoning. A simple division would be something like:

1) An OT post with unconfrontational content should be deleted if several
persons complain, eg. 5-10 people.

2) An OT post with confrontational and potentially insulting should be deleted
if one person makes a valid complaint, eg. "I would like the moderators to
delete the thread about the US elections as soon as possible. I don't find it
reasonable to be subjected to ridecule in an off topic thread just because I
happen to be an American citizen..." and so on.

Interpretation of "valid complaint" can be tricky, but not impossible IMHO.
