My condolences... it seems you will have to reinstall. But before that, as long as you still can start windows in safe mode, you could try the system file recovery utility (I don't know the original english name of this tool). I think the exe file is sfc.exe IIRC; unfortunately it is no longer included in Windows ME. But in W98, it was also accessible in the tools menu of the system information program. This sfc.exe is able to find system files which have been overwritten or deleted, and offers easy restoring of the original versions from the windows installation cd. Maybe this is your last chance?
