You may try System Information on the Start Menu-System Tools. Go to Tools and run "System File Checker". Windows will attempt to identify changed or corrupted files and you will have to reinstall those individual files from Win98 CD( it will guide you).If this doesn't work it may be necessary for a new install, which is no big deal, I have done it many times.
