John M. I hope you have stopped to read.
Before we get to the point...
Someone asked:
<<I have been trying to create an opening book by importing a pgn file. Every
attempt has resulted in this message - "import error: an error occurred
importing the pgn file". Has anyone else tried to import pgn files into an
opening book in CM8000? Does the pgn file have to be free of commentary and/or
variations?>>
I get something similar if I start a new book and THEN try to import a pgn. The
trick for me is to import a pgn with out starting a new book (it will be done
automatically). Alternately, Start your new book but don't leave it empty.
Enter e4 by moving that pawn on the chessboard. Then cursor back to root and
import your pgn.
Quoting John:
<<-- Added an "Import PGN Settings" dialog that allows you to set the criteria
by which games in a PGN file are imported into an opening book.>>
This is very nice to have. I'm not sure it's the problem, perhaps a part of the
problem.
Here are my discoveries, There may be other problems, I have no way of knowing.
I have tried to reduce these two pgn to demonstrate without clutter.

will fail the import of the pgn into a Chessmater opening book.

will fail to import into a CM8000 opening book.
Hope that helps,
