I don't totally agree here. In 1999 at Paderborn (?), Shredder won the WCCC using only a PIII-550. Many other programs were running on much larger hardware - I think P.CoNnerS was running on something like 60xPII-300, Zugzwang was also running on a large message-passing architecture, and several programs had more 'normal' Quad Xeons and the like.
