There was also a windows version before VC II, called "Virtual Chess" (for Windows), which was much better than the DOS (Virtua) version. I had even better test results from this 1st windows version than from VC II in tactics and endgame positions. Maybe this is one of the reasons why it is discontinued; they couldn't achieve progress (more of the opposite). Nevertheless, there were other releases like "Virtual Chess Platinum" (a collection of various versions), and Virtual Chess for the Nintendo 64, which was cheap; a disappointment. See CSS 4/99. I would estimate the 1st windows version to have about the same strength as Genius 5 or Nimzo 98, for example. It would have had a reputation, if it had appeared in the SSDF list, but AFAIK it has no autoplayer capabilities (rating list thinking strikes again). So, it remained "virtually" unknown. I believe that Virtual Chess II is approx. 50 elo weaker - but this is an opinion based on 40 test positions only. Regards, M.Scheidl
