To quote from the Crafty.doc:

"mt=n  -is used to set the number of threads to use on a
machine with more than one processor.  For  optimal  perfor-
mance,  "n"  should  be  set to the number of processors you
have, although using fewer will  reduce  the  load  on  your
machine.  For  this  command  to work, Crafty must have been
compiled with SMP defined. When compiled with  SMP  enabled,
mt=0 effectively disables the SMP code."
