Interesting.

This is food for semantics. As a non native English speaker I'm no expert, but
clearly understand it as "Black is checkmated" instead of "Black checkmated
white" as you understand it to be.

Isn't it more common to drop the copula than the object? Like "Jeroen
flabbergasted" as for "Jeroen *is* flabbergasted" instead of "Jeroen
flabbergasted someone", although how true that can be from time to time.
