In her song Express Yourself, Madonna sings "Don't go for second best baby...". I think the following position, found in the CSS magazine, is a good illustration of this principle: [D]3R4/5r1p/5ppk/8/1Q3PPq/5P2/6K1/8 w - - 0 52 52.Rd1 (-h1) wins the queen for the rook, but there is a better move: 52.Rg8!! Zugzwang! 52...Qh5 [52...f5 53.g5+ Kh5 54.Qd6 threatens # in 3: 55.Qxg6+ hxg6 56.Rh8+; 52...g5 53.Qd6 threatens # in 3: 54.fxg5+ Qxg5 55.Qh2+] 53.gxh5 Rc7 54.Qf8+ Kxh5 55.Qxf6 Rc2+ 56.Kg3 1-0 (from a game Junior 6.0 - Shredder 4.0 Thüringen 2000) I think there will be a large band width of solving times. In my tests, surprisingly Doctor? 3.0 was among the best with 5 seconds on a P3/700. Regards, M.Scheidl P.S.
