My suggestion is to check the fan/heatsink on your new CPU.  It could be working
badly (or not at all) and your processor can be overheating, which will cause
all sorts of problems like you describe.  I had almost the exact same problem a
while ago when my CPU fan failed - it only caused problems when I was using 100%
of the CPU for a while, and only chess-programs stress the machine so much.
This sounds very much like what you're experiencing.
