Estimates vary, but the SSDF, who have certainly the largest body of data on computer-computer matches, say that a factor of 2 in speed is worth 70 rating points, so at 33 MHz, it should be 70*log(33/16)/log(2) = 73 points stronger. See http://home.swipnet.se/~w-36794/ssdf/ssdf-faq.htm for this discussion: I quote from this page: "Q: How important is speed? A: If you double the clock speed, you gain about 70 points. That was true ten years ago, when we evaluated Constellation, Plymate and others at different speeds, and it still seems to be true in 1998 when we run PC programs that have a much higher playing strength. Some say that it varies between different machines or programmers, that some programs gain more and others less from an increase in speed, but that has never been proved. You will certainly find differences if you compare all programs we have tested at different clock frequencies, but such differences could well be attributed to statistical inaccuracies." > >Today, for my birthday, I get a new toy: a color Handspring Prism running the >PalmOS at 33 MHz. With Chess Genius 1.2, would this be the strongest (and >nicest looking) LCD chess computer ever? It would definitely be in the running. As another noted, you might be able to speed this up further with an overclocking program like Afterburner (see: http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=40704120000619023305&prodID=7429 *** NOTE: there is a comment in the feedback that suggests this program may not work on the Prism, so try before you buy ( I do see that the animation on this page includes Chess Genius <grin> ) Also, if Chess Genius used "pondering" (thinking on the opponent's time) that might be worth another 30 points (though it would just about double the battery drain). If you are interested, you might email Richard Lang at support@chessgenius.com and suggest this feature for the next version. > >Woo-hoo! Yes, I would be happy to receive that for Christamas, myself! -Richard
