there is a nice program called WINE - i think it stands for 'WINE is not an
emulator' which runs windows programs under linux. i don't have very hard
numbers, but i have seen my checkers program run at 650kN/s on a 900MHz
K7 under WINE compared to 500kN/s on my 600MHz K7 under windows - so there seems
to be very little performance penalty to pay.
but then WINE does not work with some programs - does anyone know about
chess programs?
