I've heard the rumor for a long time that he's a good chess player, but I never
found out anything more specific than this, nor have I heard any evidence that
he played chess "officially" within the last fifteen years.

It's not a particularly big deal.

He is a good bridge player, I think recently he was in the US championship or
something like that.

I wouldn't be suprised if he was a good chess player, I can say with authority
that he is a very smart dude.
