It's very stable. Much more so than Windows 95 or 98. Windows NT is
pretty good .. it is really hard to crash the whole OS.

Mandrake is a good distro.

Yes and no. I've had long and painful experience with Windows emulators,
including expensive commercial ones. In my experience, these things are
fragile at best.

There are other alternatives. It is easy to dual-boot a PC to run both
Linux and Windows. You do have to reboot to change environments, but it's
not very difficult. There's even a utility (called "loadlin"?) that can be
set up as a shortcut in Windows. Click on it, it switches to MS-DOS mode,
loads the Linux kernel and boots it. Takes about 5 seconds. (N.b. this
worked in Windows 98, it may not work in other Windows variants). You
can easily move files across OSs because Linux lets you mount DOS
formatted disks.

I used to do this but now I have a home network: a couple of Linux boxes
in the basement, connected with a wireless LAN to a Windows box upstairs.
I can login to Linux and do stuff there from my PC.
