John,

I don't think there's a standard, other than that in xboard, winboard
and amiga-board (the latter two being ports of the first).  But one
could think of a simple command set, consisting of things like new game,
set position, move piece, start search, etc.

Once an interface exists, chess programmers could simply write code to
accept the commands specific to that interface, an easy task.  A chess
engine, after all, doesn't do much other than get a position and search
a move.  So I don't think there's a need for a standard.
