Forgive my ignorance, but what is the "branching factor" and how do you measure
it?

Yes, I've noticed that a few times as well.

Your depth and speed observations are similar to mine.
I'm running a little 45'+10'' (Athlon 800, 32Mb hash) match between Shredder and
Gandalf for fun. Mostly because I like the way they both play. So far Gandalf is
leading 5.5-4.5. Curiously enough, Shredder hasn't been able to win with white.
The fastest game was a nice attack by Gandalf. The only win with white so far.
