Many rank Bronstein and Tal above Botvinnik. I "rated" Karpov above Kasparov. To refer only to a ratings list, or only to match results, would deny all of those human values behind our chess-judgement. But without these "spiritual" components, we are all cold mechanisms. No thanks. This state of affairs now exists in computer chess too. With so many programs near the top, "passion" can resonably be permitted to trump, say, 100 rating points. This leaves all the top programs in play, with regard to the question of which one is "best". It is true that the programmers must measure their programs somehow, but I don't. So I recommend, to those interested in such questions, downloading the PGN of the matches played between these programs, and playing through them, trusting your own chess-judgement to overrule the match score, sometimes.
