ExChess moves up. There are still hundreds of games to go before the contest
has finished. Only the 1 and 2 crown divisions have been completed. The
4-crown division has 13 rounds and is a long way from finished. One more month,
I would guess, at a minimum. All told, well over 1000 games will be played to
complete the contest.

The machines are all PII class, with most of the games on 300 MHz machines. The
games are played at long time controls (G/90 on 300 MHz equivalent time control
or better). Some of the machines are 500Mhz, 600MHz, 900 MHz, or 1GHz. Even on
the really fast ones, I don't reduce the time control under G/60. The idea of
the contest is to (by some relatively scientific measure) find the real strength
of freely available Winboard programs at "Standard" chess. The "Crowns"
notation comes from Volker's Winboard site, where he rated the engines by
awarding crowns.

There have been some big surprises (for me). In particular, Amy does really
well on the fastest hardware. I suspect that on a multiple CPU, 1GHz or better
machine at slow time control, Amy will surprise a lot of people.
