They all work on the tree together. the 8-cpu version works exactly like the two cpu version, only faster. The tree is split at various points, and the processors search the resulting pieces in parallel. All the independent scores are then "rationalized" together to get the final result for that node... It is much more complicated than that simple explanation implies...
