IIRC, the pieces variable holds a material count where r=5, b=3, and so forth. So 'pieces > 5' says go ahead and do null move when you have more than a rook's worth of pieces (and you aren't in check, etc., of course). When there is only a single rook or minor piece left (pieces <= 5) 'depth < 421' must then be satisfied to get a null move. This prevents null move from kicking in until the remaining depth to be searched drops below 421 (7 plies or less). -Dan.
