If you've got anything newer than that, it should be a good chip. The questions are, what else is going on here? Have you been sold something that is overclocked? Do you have a bad motherboard? Bad memory chips? Not a big enough heatsink, or a bad fan, or simply poor ventilation generally in the computer? Or, in the case of the K6-3 especially, do you have the bios patches recommended by AMD? CPU chips these days are usually very good. The rest of the computer can be suspect, especially if it was put together by a rip-off merchant. Take it back and demand stuff that works.
