I think you're on to something. Older chess programs, playing at full strength, seem to make more convicing "amateur" opponents than newer GM-level programs with features for artificial weakening. For analysis, of course you want the shiniest new programs, but for playing against the computer, I say bring back Fritz 2, Gideon, or what have you. Surely the manufacturers must still have some of those old programs on hand; why not sell them at cut rates? And is it possible to adapt great old stand-alone programs like the Fidelity series to a PC?
