I'm sure there are many PC utilities that capture a screen region as a
graphic (BMP, GIF, PICT, whatever). I have lots of Macintosh screen
capture programs that do that. In my youth ;), I even wrote a review
article on Macintosh screen capture utilities. For all of these,
however, to post to r.g.c.c. or here, I must either manually type the
text from the image, or use an OCR program.

The unusual thing about the Mac utility Text Capture, is that it
captures the TEXT displayed on the screen, as TEXT, not as a graphic. As
a result, I can immediately paste the HIARCS PV into a posting/email
messages. For example, I'll pull up HIARCS now, turn book off, and start
is at the initial position,
and use Text Capture to copy and paste the successive PVs into this
post:

 6»20 1 e2-e4 b8-c6 d2-d4 d7-d5 = 9
 7»25 7 e2-e4 b8-c6 d2-d4 d7-d5 e4-e5 c8-f5 f1-b5 = 27
 8»25 26 e2-e4 b8-c6 g1-f3 g8-f6 e4-e5 f6-d5 d2-d4 e7-e6 =
26
 9»29 62 e2-e4 b8-c6 g1-f3 e7-e5 b1-c3 f8-b4 f1-c4 g8-h6 O-O
 = 27

This is much nicer than retyping PVs by hand (as I used to), if not as
nice
as having a log file feature, like Crafty and MacChess. (Actually, it
would be nice if Rebel/Fritz/CM5500/HIARCS had a log file function - the
KKKKup time control issue would be solved. Why is it that only freeware
programs seem to have this function?).

Which PC utilities do this (capture a screen element as text) rather
than
as a graphic? It would be nice to have such a utility to use with HIARCS
PC.
