Although the SSDF rating list contains more
than 76.000 tournament games, you can not
find ratings for all chess programs in it. With
the ambition to reduce the statistical error
by playing hundreds of games with each new
program, there is no possibility to include
all of the amateur Winboard-engines which now
are available.

Neither has it been possible to provide ratings
for all of the "strongest" commercially available
chess programs. This is partly due to limited
test-resources, but also due to legal threats
and the lack of the possibility to play games
automatically.

For the first time in three years we now
include a new program written by Ed Schröder.
It's Rebel Century 3.0 K6-2 450 MHz, which after
410 games has received a rating of 2520. Rebel 9
has one hundred points less on a P200 MMX. The
engine in itself seems to be somewhat stronger
than Rebel 9 against other chess programs.

Ed Schröder has noticed that errors affecting
the play occurs when the DOS-version of auto232
is used. He doesn't know how big the damage is,
only that there is loss of strength. In a log-
file you can see if there has been something
wrong with a certain game.

One of the testers has reported such an incident,
but in this particular game Century 3.0 won. The
most obvious temporary engine-damages which I
personally have seen has been in the latest
ChessBase-programs, where the nodecount in long
series of games sometimes has gone down to only a
few percent of the normal, and then stayed there
during the following games.

If we become aware of games where the play is
obviously weakened, such games are of course dis-
carded. Still, the above mentioned phenomenon is
something to keep in mind when ratings are inter-
preted.

Since the latest list Gandalf 4.32f K6-2 450 MHz
has lost 15 points, and now has 2530. Hiarcs 7.01
K6-2 450 MHz has gained 6 points.

A couple of days ago we received copies of
Nimzo 8.0 and Deep Fritz, and these programs will
now be tested on (a single!) K6-2 450 MHz. As soon
as the promised upgrade to Chess Tiger 13.0 comes,
it will also be included on the list.

Next rating list will appear in February or
March.
