Now my PhD is finished, I have more time to spend on neural network
chess. Would you consider a neural network playing chess to be
intelligent? I have a fair idea that when it gets playing, its
thought processes will be inscrutable, so it won't really be possible
to tell how it's doing it. It will learn from experience: is that a
characteristic of intelligence?

Personally, I think that playing chess (exercising skill) is a part
of intelligence. LEARNING chess is a deeper part of intelligence.
