You know, the freeware 16bit Windows programs were not all that strong, any that
I know of. Dos programs like Now or Ychess can just beat the snot out of
Windows programs like Owlchess of GNUchess v3.21.

Do you have a mouse that won't work in Dos programs? Because there's several
strong freeware Dos Chess programs, and slim pickens for the 16 bit Windows
programs.

For what it's worth, you can run the Windows 95 version of GNUchess v4.14
interface in Windows 3.1 if you install the 32 bit extender, I forget what
that's called, you need to look it up in the text files and get a download. But
honesty, that's about my favorite looking interface, and it's pretty darn strong
IMO.
