Subject: Unix networking question

hello,
I just installed my Unix box at home to do proxy serving, however I noticed
something weird...
I can't connect to another computer in my network at home using ftp. It just
works with telnet.

I have this line in /etc/inetd.conf
 ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -l -a

But "unfortunately" there is no in.ftpd in /etc/sbin just in.telnetd,
in.rlogind and so on ....

How can I "add" in.ftpd there??
If that's the ftp server - how can I start it ??
Sorry for these questions but I'm new to networking .....

Also as a side question... How does unix encrypt users passwords? What's
"salt" sequence? How does unix use Des algorithm?
 thanks a lot!!!

   Ed
