The difference in playing strength between the best chess
programs is very small or perhaps nonexisting. Six programmers
have their strongest entrants within a range of only 35 points!
New versions from other programmers haven't yet been tested
on Pentium MMX 200 MHz, and some of them could also reach
a rating around 2500 and above.

Ed Schröder has retaken the first place on the present list,
but only with one single point! Mark Uniackes Hiarcs 6 has
lost a couple of more points than Rebel 9, compared with
the latest list, and that gives it a second place.

The strongest new entrant on this rating list is Chrilly
Donningers Nimzo '98 P200 MMX. After 245 games it has a
rating of 2530, only three points behind Rebel 9! The new
version of the Nimzo-program seems to be clearly stronger
than Nimzo 3.5, probably with 65 to 70 points! We are
 impressed!

MChess Pro 7.1 P200 MMX is a new version of Marty Hirschs
chess program. It does not appear to play stronger against
other chess programs than MCP 6. At the moment the new
version has three points less than the former. It's not
an easy task to further improve one of the strongest programs.

Whether Stefan Meyer-Kahlens new program Shredder 2.0
Pentium MMX 200 MHz has been improved compared to
Shredder 1.0 or not is difficult to say, but it appears
so. The reason for my statement is the fact that we have
only played somewhat more than 100 games each with the two
 versions, and on different hardwares.

At the moment the average rating difference between P90 and
P200 MMX is 78 points. With this figure applied to Shredder,
the improvement would be around 34 points. As it looks right
now, Shredder 2.0 is one of the very strongest chess programs!
But more games are needed in order to diminish the statistical
 uncertainty of it's rating.

In SSDF we are very pleased with the fact that it now is possible
to play automatically also with chess programs for Windows! So
far it works excellent with Shredder 2 and very good with Nimzo '98.
 Thank you, Stefan and Chrilly!!

We have seen many emails asking about Fritz 5. Why isn't Fritz 5
included on the list? The reason is that we have had problems with
the auto232-version provided by ChessBase. So far only one of us
has managed to get it to work properly, but we hope that some of the
other testers also will be successful in the near future.

Next list will appear late February. With much luck Fritz 5 could
be included on the list. The other programs will have more stable
 ratings by then.
