To avoid two users with the same password having the same encrypted password two
random characters are prepended to the plain text password before encryption.
These characters are called the 'salt'. Example:
plain text password: secret
add salt: aBsecret
^^ the salt
encrypted: aBu34htji3nf
^^ the salt again
