One benefit is it lets the engine negotiate with the GUI for which "features" the engine can and can not handle. There is also a bit more synchronization included to help bypass a few race conditions that cause grief. UCI is _so_ different from winboard / xboard that it is very difficult to implement in a program that is also xboard protocol. IE things like the engine can't make any move without GUI instruction, it can't ponder, etc. without permission, and so forth.
