Here's the problem with pause: all it does is top the game clocks. If an engine is thinking about the game, it will go on thinking even if the game is "paused". The difficulty arises in that there APPEARS to be no way to stop an engine from thinking WITHOUT losing all of the analysis that has been done up to that time. So, theoretically, you could be playing a game against a personality, and every five seconds or so, press pause, and then resume, and the engine would have to start over from scratch, even though it lost the five seconds of time. This, of course, would be cheating. The other edge of this sword is what you are experiencing: if you press pause, the engine might still be chewing up your CPU. The game, in a chessic sense, is paused. Both of you (you and the computer opponent) COULD continue to think about the position (even though the pieces have been hidden). So, the lesser of two evils was chosen. Does anybody know of a way to truly pause an engine in its thought process, and not lose any of the data? jm
