I would bet some MTDf programs use ETC. Its nice to use it as noone can harp on you for generating all moves, its required (ok, you gain some to optimize the inner loop/search). A nice side effect is that the move found will sometimes be better than the one found not using ETC. Searching the smaller subterees is one other search enhancement, but chess trees are mostly uniform and the cost for keeping track of sizes is high in relation to the saving in search space.
