It isn't all that clear that its a loss, especially since the move found often is better than the move produced by the same program not using ETC (In solving test positions its a clear win). But if you do ETC too close to the leaf nodes it's definitely a loss. A program with a big eval might be able to do ETC to two plies from leaf and a heavy root pre-processor migth need four plies.
